One thawing hug with Ice Sculpture Anna and Elsa has seen the error of her ways? As happy as we all are about this resolution (especially as it indicates the end of the movie is near), we still have some concerns. During Anna and Kristoff’s visit to the trolls’ den, one sassy troll, who is attempting to set them up, suggests that Anna and Hans’s engagement is a “flex arrangement.” (The setup leads to one of my 2-year-old’s favorite lines, in which one baby troll says, “I don’t see no ring.”) Are the trolls advocating for an open marriage between Anna and Kristoff?ġ0. “That really annoys me-no regard for the damage she’s caused.”ĩ.
She sings, ‘I’m such a fool, I can’t be free,’ ” he said. After Anna explains to Elsa that she’s caused an eternal winter, Karlo explains that “her reaction is entirely egocentric. “She’s content with the whole realm freezing to death.” Karlo, a former colleague and a father of one, also cannot get past Elsa’s narcissism. “Elsa is a pretty terrible human,” he said. Children seem to gloss over the queen of Arendelle’s ethical failings (owing to the subliminal mind control, most likely), but adults like my friend Andrew, father of one, see the truth. Elsa’s moral compass is deeply questionable. But in a single careless moment in her ice castle, overcome by their awkward spoken-word duet “For the First Time in Forever,” she turns her back on Anna, strikes her in the heart, and doesn’t even notice?Ĩ. Elsa’s fear of hurting Anna is so crippling and so all-consuming that she spends her life as a recluse. Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls? I’m all for owning one’s sexuality, but I suspect her seductive hip-swaying was created by that same Disney animator who drew a hidden penis on the VHS cover of The Little Mermaid.ħ. It’s curious that when Elsa finally embraces her powers and finds herself (cue “ Let It Go”), she appears to unleash. On the topic of Kristoff: Why was Jonathan Groff, one of the greatest Broadway stars performing (currently playing King George in Hamilton), cast to voice him but wasn’t given a single song to sing? The two-line, off-key “Reindeers Are Better Than People” ditty doesn’t count.Ħ. But then Anna appears to fall in love with Kristoff in the same time frame and no one raises an eyebrow.ĥ. Elsa chastises Anna, rightfully, for falling in love and getting engaged to Hans in the space of a single day. Who are these people and where have they been for the last 20 years?Ĥ. Potts or Lumiere types to keep Anna company while she was estranged from Elsa? When Anna is rushed back to Arendelle after Elsa freezes her heart (no spoilers, that would be impossible), a gaggle of palace staffers ushers her inside. But that has nothing on “Let It Go,” the Elsa (Idina Menzel) anthem that’s so painfully catchy, Frozen’s director has apologized to parents for the song.ģ.
I’ve now asked my husband to warn me before he presses play, as the film’s opening grunts of greater Arendelle’s ice workers (“ stronger than one, stronger than 10, stronger than a hundred men”) now elicit heart palpitations.
But when you start watching Frozen every day (multiple times on the weekends, if we’re being honest), it starts to chip away at your sanity. The “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” sequence is adorable (“ okay, byeeee”), beautifully animated, and includes a Joan of Arc reference for adults’ benefit. Upon first viewing this Nordic fairy tale, I was charmed: It’s not all about marrying a prince (although getting the guy remains a factor). Following its release in 2013, Frozen became the highest-grossing animated film in history with more than $1.2 billion in ticket sales worldwide, and I’m sorry to remind you that Frozen 2 is currently in the works. The next thing I knew, my child is begging (or, rather, demanding) to watch Frozen thrice daily.” The reaction is so remarkable that there is even a conspiracy theory that Disney has embedded a form of hypnosis within the film.
